Electronics Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events
On Saturday November 18, the City celebrated America Recycles Day by holding a household hazardous waste collection event in the City Hall Parking Lot. The event was a huge success with over 600 attendees participating. The City was able to collect over 15,800 pounds of electronic waste, 18,900 pounds of household hazardous waste and shredded over 3,800 pounds of sensitive documents. Any electronic item that has a plug or takes batteries was accepted and one hundred percent of the e-waste is recycled and diverted from the landfill. In addition, in partnership with the Coral Gables Police Department, residents were able to shred any sensitive documents safely and securely on-site. Finally, residents were also able to drop off their household hazardous waste (ex: paint cans, pool chemicals, compact fluorescent light bulbs, cleaners, oils, batteries, and household pesticides) to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Through the events over the last 2 years, the city has been able to collect over 80,000 pounds of electronic waste, 23,800 pounds of household hazardous waste and shredded over 5,000 pounds of sensitive documents. The next Household Hazardous Waste collection event is scheduled for Saturday November 17, 2018 from 9am-12pm in the City Hall Parking Lot. The events are organized in partnership with the Coral Gables Sustainability Advisory Board, the City of Coral Gables, STS Electronic Recycling, and Clean Harbors. On November 3, the City of Coral Gables Sustainability Advisory Board in partnership with Waste Management hosted a free Recycling 101 Seminar at the Coral Gables Museum (285 Aragon Avenue). Residents, businesses, and contractors all attended and were able to get all of their recycling questions answered straight from the experts, hear about what the City is doing to increase recycling, and learn more about can and can’t be recycled. Attendees also were able to see what happens to their recycling once it is taken away from their home or business.
Did you know the City Beautiful collects cardboard for recycling?
Residents are urged to recycle their cardboard rather than place in trash piles in the right of way. All cardboard, set out for recycling, must be placed inside your red bin with the rest of recyclables, or placed neatly next to it. The cardboard MUST be cut up or folded into manageable pieces for sanitation workers to remove. You may request additional red recycle bins for free by calling 305-460-5346.
