Improving Our Sanitation Collection Services
In order to improve the City’s sanitation collection services, the City hosted two Comprehensive Sanitation Plan Workshops in November 2018 and February 2019 seeking resident input. The City is analyzing how to improve our current residential backyard collection services. This includes the household garbage and recycling, our bulk trash pile service, and "white goods" (refrigerators, washing machines, etc.) collection service. Please note that we are not proposing to eliminate the current backyard collection services.
For more information on the workshops, please call 305-460-5000.

Electronics Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events
Mark Your Calendars for the 2019 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events (Please Note: Dates and Times are subject to change)
On Saturday November 17 th, the City of Coral Gables celebrated America Recycles Day by recycling old electronics and safely disposing of household hazardous waste in an environmentally friendly manner. The event was a huge success with over 400 cars (approximately 800 people) that attended. As a result, over 28,000 pounds of material was collected and diverted from the landfill. This included 12,000 pounds of electronic waste, 7,700 pounds of household hazardous waste, and 8,400 pounds of sensitive documents were shredded. Any electronic item that has a plug or takes batteries was recycled. Coral Gables residents were able to drop off their household hazardous waste (ex: paint cans, pool chemicals, compact fluorescent light bulbs, cleaners, oils, batteries, and household pesticides). Residents were also encouraged to bring any large boxes or pieces of cardboard to the event and the City ensured they got recycled properly. As a result of the collection events over the last 3 years, the city has been able to divert over 120,000 pounds of electronic waste and household hazardous waste from potential entering the landfill. The City has also been able to shredded over 17,000 pounds of sensitive documents. These household hazardous waste collection events are organized in partnership with the Coral Gables Sustainability Advisory Board, the City of Coral Gables Police and Public Works Departments, STS Electronic Recycling, and Clean Harbors. For more information on the event or other City sustainability efforts please call 305-460-5008.
On November 3, the City of Coral Gables Sustainability Advisory Board in partnership with Waste Management hosted a free Recycling 101 Seminar at the Coral Gables Museum (285 Aragon Avenue). Residents, businesses, and contractors all attended and were able to get all of their recycling questions answered straight from the experts, hear about what the City is doing to increase recycling, and learn more about can and can’t be recycled. Attendees also were able to see what happens to their recycling once it is taken away from their home or business.
Did you know the City Beautiful collects cardboard for recycling?
Residents are urged to recycle their cardboard rather than place in trash piles in the right of way. All cardboard, set out for recycling, must be placed inside your red bin with the rest of recyclables, or placed neatly next to it. The cardboard MUST be cut up or folded into manageable pieces for sanitation workers to remove. You may request additional red recycle bins for free by calling 305-460-5346.
