Coral Gables’ Tree Canopy Ranks Among the Highest in Florida
New digital inventory identifies nearly 39,000 trees in public rights-of-way and 58% citywide canopy coverage
CORAL GABLES, FL — A recently completed smart city digital tree inventory confirms that Coral Gables has one of the most extensive urban tree canopies in Florida.
The inventory identified nearly 39,000 trees within the city’s public rights-of-way. It also measured total citywide tree canopy coverage at 58%, including trees on both public and private property.
The results place Coral Gables among Florida’s leaders in tree canopy coverage. By comparison, Miami-Dade County is working toward a countywide goal of 30% coverage by 2030.
“Coral Gables was envisioned as a city defined by its natural beauty, shaded streets and lush landscape, and we have worked for generations to preserve that vision,” said Mayor Vince Lago. “This new data demonstrates the value of our continued investment in the responsible management of our urban forest and the important role our residents play in protecting trees on private property.”
Trees have been central to the identity and planning of Coral Gables since the city’s founding. Today, the city’s urban forest helps shade streets and neighborhoods, reduce temperatures, manage stormwater, improve air quality, support wildlife and enhance the community’s distinctive character.
Coral Gables has been designated a Tree City USA community since 1985, reflecting more than four decades of commitment to responsible urban forestry. The city maintains and protects trees in public rights-of-way through ongoing planting, pruning, monitoring, succession planning and other professional management practices.
The digital inventory provides measurable and verifiable information that will help the city monitor the condition and distribution of its trees, guide maintenance and planting decisions, and plan for the long-term health and resilience of the urban forest.
