CORAL GABLES, FL – The City of Coral Gables is pleased to announce that the Florida League of Cities has appointed Commissioner Melissa Castro to serve as Vice Chair on the Florida League of Cities 2025-26 Development, Code Compliance and Redevelopment Committee, one of the League’s five Legislative Policy Committees. This committee tackles critical issues including development, redevelopment, housing, community planning, zoning, eminent domain, property rights, short-term rentals, code enforcement, building and fire code, building permitting and concurrency management.
Legislative Policy Committee chairs, vice chairs and members were appointed by Florida League of Cities President Holly D. Smith, Vice Mayor of Sanibel.
“I’m honored to represent Coral Gables on the Florida League of Cities’ Development, Code Compliance, and Redevelopment Policy Committee,” said Castro. “Growth and change are constant in Florida, and I look forward to working with my colleagues across the state to ensure that development policies protect the character of our communities, strengthen local decision-making and balance progress with preservation. By focusing on thoughtful planning and fiscal responsibility, we can help shape a future that supports both residents and businesses.”
As a Legislative Policy Committee member, Castro will help develop the League’s Legislative Platform, which details priority issues that are most likely to affect daily municipal governance and local decision-making during the upcoming legislative session, as well as help League staff understand the real-world implications of proposed legislation. Committee members are also asked to serve as advocates for local decision-making throughout the legislative process.
