Board of Architects

About

The Board of Architects was created to ensure that the city’s architecture is consistent with the city’s regulations and to preserve the community's traditional aesthetics. It is responsible for determining whether development applications satisfy the Design Review Standards set out in Section 5-100 of the Coral Gables Zoning Code. These standards include, among other things, adherence to design principles such as the compatibility of elements of color, materials, fenestration and proportion, as well as an intrinsic sense of order in all aspects of the design. The City Architect is available to assist applicants in the preparation of their submittals and, in general, to help applicants find reasonable and appropriate solutions to design challenges. The board meets every Thursday to respond to applications in a timely manner.

Please note that the City of Coral Gables requires a tree survey and tree protection plan when submitting to the Development Review Committee and Board of Architects and when applying for demolition permits.

Board of Architects submittal deadlines

The Board of Architects consists of at least seven local architects appointed by the City Manager and approved by the City Commission. The purpose of the Board is “to ensure that the city’s architecture is consistent with the city’s regulations and to preserve the traditional aesthetic character of the community.” The board meets every Thursday morning to consider a wide variety of building and development applications such as new residences, new commercial structures, pools, pavement, signs, roof tiles, all building expansions, etc. For a typical building permit, the board’s review would involve a preliminary and final board approval prior to permit issuance. The board also makes recommendations on conditional use and hears appeals from the City Architect’s decision. An appeal of the board’s decision is appeal to the City Commission (Section 14-208 Zoning Code).
