The City of Coral Gables Welcomes Assistant City Attorney Yesenia Alfonso
CORAL GABLES, FL — Yesenia Alfonso has been named Assistant City Attorney for the City of
Coral Gables. In this role, she will report to City Attorney Cristina M. Suárez, assist the City Attorney’s
Office and provide legal counsel to city departments.
“We are pleased to welcome Yesenia back to the City of Coral Gables,” said Suárez. “It is especially
meaningful to see a former intern return to serve the city in this role. I had the pleasure of working
with her early in her legal career, and she brings strong professional experience, sound judgment and
a commitment to public service that will be valuable to our office and to the city.”
Experienced in both the public and private sectors, Alfonso most recently served as Legal Counsel II
for FedEx Corporation, where she provided strategic legal counsel on regulatory, corporate,
commercial, employment, transportation, marketing and communications, and operations matters.
Her work included drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements; collaborating with government
agencies and internal departments on permitting, licensing, audits and investigations; and helping
ensure compliance with federal, state, local and international laws.
Alfonso previously served as an Assistant County Attorney with the Broward County Attorney’s Office,
where she provided legal advice and guidance to the Broward County Aviation Department, which
manages Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and North Perry Airport. In that role, she
worked on contracts, regulatory compliance, policies and procedures, public records requests,
procurement matters, and county resolutions and ordinances.
She also has litigation experience from her time as an in-house trial attorney for Kemper Corporation,
where she handled personal injury protection matters, negotiated with opposing counsel, drafted
pleadings and motions, conducted examinations under oath and depositions, and advised claims
professionals.
Alfonso earned her Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from St. Thomas University School of Law,
where she ranked in the top 5% of her class and served on the St. Thomas Law Review. She also
holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance, cum laude, from Florida International
University and an Associate in Arts in Business Administration from Miami Dade College. She is a
member in good standing of The Florida Bar and is fluent in Spanish.
