Updates
March 17, 2026:
FPL’s Storm Secure Underground Program continues to advance across Coral Gables. The updated map (Revised December 2025, Department of Public Works Engineering Division) reflects the current status of all phases of the program.
Map of FPL areas [PDF]As of this update:
- 23.50% of the City’s urban area already had underground electric service prior to the SSUP.
- 2.40% has been converted under SSUP between 2022 and 2024, bringing the cumulative total to 25.90%.
- 8.25% of the City is currently under construction (2024–2026), increasing the cumulative total to 34.15% once completed.
- 4.10% is in active design (construction anticipated for 2026–2027), bringing the cumulative total to 38.25%.
- 2.25% is in public outreach (construction anticipated 2027–2028), which will bring the cumulative total to 40.50%.
- The remaining 59.50% represents future SSUP areas scheduled beyond 2028.
Design and construction remain phased by feeder line, consistent with FPL’s reliability-based prioritization methodology. Areas currently under construction are anticipated to be completed within the 2024–2026 timeframe. Areas in design are moving toward construction in 2026–2027, and neighborhoods presently in public outreach are expected to begin construction in 2027–2028.
Property owners in areas entering design or outreach phases will receive direct communication from FPL, including letters and follow-up coordination as needed. Each affected customer will have a designated FPL point of contact throughout the process.
The city will continue to provide periodic updates as additional feeder areas move from design to construction and as cumulative undergrounding percentages increase.
April 12, 2024: The next phase planned by FPL for overhead to underground conversion under FPL’s Storm Secure Underground Program (SSUP) is shown in the area in red below. This area is located approximately at the NW corner of the Coral Gables municipal limits. Design is underway and public outreach to area residents (FPL customers) has begun. Construction in this area is expected to begin in year 2025.
The areas shown in blue and orange below are also in early design, and public outreach to area residents (FPL customers) is commencing, with construction anticipated to begin in 2025 as well. This phase is located in the area south, and immediately east, of the Biltmore zone (blue area) and west of the Riviera zone (orange).
December 1, 2023: FPL continues to work on the initial construction and previous update (see Jan. 18). FPL will also begin the design and planning for the following work in 2024. Links to the maps are bulleted below. Please note the actual work will begin in 2025.
Jan. 18, 2023: Later this month, FPL intends to start the undergrounding construction work in the first sub-phases of neighborhood laterals tied to Feeder #800442. This sub-phase project area outlined in green is bounded by US-1, LeJeune Road, Sansovino Avenue, and Riviera Drive. All needed easements for this sub-phase are in-hand. FPL's contractor has all the necessary permits. FPL advises it has four (4) other similar sub-phases ready to go and will be moving forward on these within the next few months. FPL expects each sub-phase to take 10 to 12 weeks to complete.
