Back-to-School Safety

As summer winds down, back-to-school season begins across the region. Most parochial schools will welcome students on Tuesday, Aug. 12, followed by Miami Dade County Public Schools on Thursday, Aug. 14. The University of Miami will also see an influx of activity, with new student moving on Aug. 11–12, returning students move-in on Aug. 17, and the first day of classes on Aug. 18.

With the return of school comes increased traffic throughout the city, especially near school zones and university areas. "We remind all drivers to slow down, remain alert, and obey posted school zone speed limits," said Coral Gables Police Chief Edward J. Hudak, Jr. "The safety of our students and pedestrians is a top priority as the new school year begins."

To enhance safety, Coral Gables Police Department will be implementing speed cameras in certain school zones throughout the city. Please allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes during peak morning and afternoon hours.
