Peter J. Iglesias was appointed to the position of Interim City Manager on September 11, 2018 and appointed as City Manager on September 25, 2018. As City Manager, he is responsible for the professional day-to-day management of this full-service City including the oversight of a $195 million general operating budget, a five-year $220 million capital plan, twelve city departments and a dedicated workforce of 1,100 full and part time employees. In addition to beautiful tree-lined residential neighborhoods serving 51,000 residents, the City has more than 11 million square feet of office space and over 10,000 businesses – ranging from small start-ups, one-of-a-kind retailers and award-winning restaurants to regional headquarters for global conglomerates. Coral Gables is also home to the main campus of the University of Miami (with more than 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 14,000 employees) as well as a strong and growing international trade and consular presence, and a rich array of cultural offerings. This combination of residential living, global economy, and university presence, calls for adept municipal approaches to retain and enhance the brand reputation of “the City Beautiful” amidst the growing metropolis of Miami-Dade County.
City Manager Iglesias returned to the City of Coral Gables in 2016 as the Assistant City Manager for Operations & Infrastructure/Building Official to oversee Public Works, Development Services, Parking, Historical Resources and Cultural Arts, Economic Development, and Community Recreation departments. Prior to returning to the City of Coral Gables in 2016, City Manager Iglesias served as the Senior Director of Building, Planning and Zoning, Historical and IT Integration at the City of Miami for 3.5 years. He is a recognized and respected professional with more than 35 years of complex engineering and construction experience in both the private and public sectors, and a leading expert in the Florida Building Code, Life Safety Code, FEMA and ADA. As a results-oriented leader who works effectively with members of the public, developers, residents, design professionals, City employees and elected officials, he prides himself on finding solutions to complex situations. He is highly skilled in the development of state-of-the-art technology (including electronic permitting and inspection software) that helps reduce turnaround, increase accuracy, and insure accountability at all levels of the organization.
City Manager Iglesias is the past Chair of the Governance Board for Miami Wind at the College of Engineering at the University of Miami, a Governance Board Member of the Wall of Wind at Florida International University, a member of the Miami-Dade County High Rise Building Committee, a member of the ASCE 49 Wind Tunnel Testing Committee, and a member of the Miami-Dade County Florida Building Code-High Velocity Hurricane Zone Code Committee. He holds the following registrations: Professional Engineer (Florida and National NCEE Record), State of Florida General Contractor, State of Florida and International Code Council Building Official, and Miami-Dade County Building Official/Structural Plans Examiner/Building Plans Examiner. He is a graduate of the University of Miami (Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Structures, Cum Laude and is working towards a Doctorate of Science in Engineering) and a long-time resident of Coral Gables.
