Certified Police Officer

Police Department

Performs general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.

Qualifications: All applicants must be of good moral character pursuant to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving “moral turpitude”, and must complete all requirements established by the Coral Gables Police Department. All applicants must pass an in depth background investigation. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from the United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) is acceptable when accompanied with a certified or official transcript of grades. Out-of-state GED or the USAFI equivalency must be acceptable by the State of Florida Police Standards Council. Completion of 54 college credits at an accredited college or university. A comparable amount of training and/or experience in civilian law enforcement, federal law enforcement, or the military may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Military must present proof of honorable discharge or release. Be a U.S. citizen. Be at least 19 years of age. Valid driver's license from any state at time of application provided that prior to appointment a valid State of Florida Class E, or higher, Driver's License is obtained. License will be checked for validity and history indicating a safe driving record by the Coral Gables Police Department. Vision: Binocular and monocular vision of 20/100 uncorrected and 20/30 or better corrected. Must have color vision. Florida certified police applicants must have a State of Florida Basic Law Enforcement Certification in good standing. Out-of-state certified officers and Federal Officers must have at least one (1) complete year of full time police experience and must meet the minimum requirements governed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to determine training exemptions and an Equivalency of Training.

Applicants meeting the requirements above must pass a physical agility test, a credit check, polygraph test, psychological test, medical examination and oral interview.
