The Coral Gables Police Department is warning residents of a tri-county phone scam being perpetrated by criminals posing as Florida Power and Light employees.
Information provided by Florida Power and Light indicates that these criminals are targeting primarily members of the Hispanic community. These criminals are disguising their phone numbers to match that of an FPL facility. They advise victims that their power will be shut off if payment is not made immediately with a prepaid “Money Pak” card. Unsuspecting victims purchase a prepaid card in stores such as CVS and Walgreens which sell Money Pak cards and then provide payment information for that card to the scammers.
It is important to note that FPL does not accept Money Pak cards as an authorized form of payment on an FPL account. If contacted and requested to make a payment in this manner, residents are urged to immediately contact FPL directly to verify the status of their account. If it is determined that the call was from an individual attempting to commit fraud, residents are asked to contact the Coral Gables Police Department at 305-442-1600.
