agreements. The
Service Reliability Task Force will hold a series of public meetings,
beginning on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Commission
Chambers, 405 Biltmore Way. Additional meetings will be announced in the

City
Commits to Priorities for Economic Development >>> On Jan. 10th, the City
Commission approved the priorities developed every two years by the
members of the Economic Development Board, as presented by Chairman
Richard DeWitt. The City will work with the Business Improvement District
to implement Citywide coverage for Wi-Fi wireless access to the Internet,
as well as to improve cellular phone service coverage throughout the
City. The Board committed to participating this year in the
development of senior housing and related services for the elderly,
working in conjunction with the Senior Services Board and other entities.
Other priorities include improving educational choices in the City of
Coral Gables, and focusing on the implementation of a recently-created
Ombudsman position to facilitate permitting processes for new and small
businesses in the City. Lastly, the Board will work with the various
departments to improve the overall appearance of downtown Coral Gables,
specifically with regard to garbage and trash pickup around construction
zones. For more information, please call the Development Department at

Help Keep the Downtown Area Free of
Litter >>> With City
officials and advisory boards placing a renewed emphasis on the
cleanliness of the downtown area, the City is asking for cooperation in
helping to keep the streets free of litter. The City is doing its part by
adding 52 additional trash cans in the area and by scheduling more
frequent street sweeping, trash collection and routine pressure cleaning
of sidewalks. Additionally, officials are increasing enforcement of
Citywide clean-up laws, specifically the Ordinance entitled "Streets,
Sidewalks and Other Public Places," which requires all property owners, as
well as their tenants, to maintain their immediate surrounding areas such
as sidewalks, grass strips, alleys, curbs and other rights-of-way, up to
the edge of the pavement, free of litter. Failure to maintain these areas
clean will result in fines. For more information, call the Office of
Public Affairs at 305-460-5205. BACK TO

power outages that occurred in South Florida after Hurricanes Katrina and
Wilma, the Miami-Dade County League of Cities has established a Mayor's
Committee to work with Florida Power & Light on corrective or remedial

League President Isaac Salver, Councilman for the Town of Bay Harbor
Islands, appointed these mayors to the new committee: Mayor Don Slesnick,

Miami Beach; Mayor Manuel Díaz, Miami; Mayor Shirley Gibson, Miami
Gardens; Mayor Joseph Kelley, Opa-Locka; Mayor Manuel Maroño, Sweetwater;
Mayor Julio Robaina, Hialeah, and Mayor Wayne Slaton, Miami Lakes. The
Miami-Dade League of Cities was established in 1953 and serves to unite

Coral
Gables Joins New State Organization >>> Harnessing the collective
leadership skills in the interest of exploring and testing public policy
issues, mayors from across the state of Florida have formed a dynamic new

DeLand, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Lynn Haven, Melbourne, Miami Gardens,
Midway, Miramar, Orlando, Pensacola, Sunrise, Sweetwater, Tallahassee and
Tampa. The organization will complement the work of the Florida League of
Cities and will serve as a forum for the general studies of ideas and
policies affecting municipalities. In a recent poll of 800 registered
state voters, Floridians agreed that municipal government is the level of
government they trust the most to best respond and meet their needs during
an emergency. For additional information, contact the Florida League of
Mayors at 850-222-1996. BACK TO

29 January:
Teófilo Babun Sr., a wealthy Santiago de Cuba businessman and logging camp
owner sensed that a small skirmish near his sawmill involving a ragtag
band of guerrillas and the Cuban military was the beginning of something
historic, so he befriended the rebels' leader, Fidel Castro, and
negotiated access for his company photographer to Castro's inner circle.
Years later, his son, Teófilo Jr., finds these photos in his father's
archives. Babun Jr. and Cuban-American historian Victor Triay offer a
one-of-a-kind perspective on the complex story of "The Cuban Revolution:
Years of Promise," through these images, many of them never-before
published. The event is at 4 p.m. at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave.

nature of American success and the fragility of celebrity. The event is at
