Public invited to participate in Zoning Code rewrite process >>> The City of Coral Gables has started the process of the Zoning Code rewrite. The rewrite will include new and innovative planning processes to address future residential and commercial development with the intent to continue the preservation/protection of the character of the residential neighborhoods in concert with commercial uses. The City welcomes your participation. The next public hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, October 27, and Wednesday, November 10 for a discussion of all zoning districts. The Planning and Zoning Board review/hearings will be conducted in the City Hall Commission Chambers, Second Floor, at 4 p.m., with informal study sessions beginning an hour earlier at 3 p.m. for residents to provide comments or ask questions. Copies of the revised Code are available in the Planning Department at City Hall or can be downloaded at www.coralgables.com. Comments can be submitted via e-mail to rewritecomments@coralgables.com, regular mail, or fax at 305-460-5327.

Coral Gables receives national accreditation >>> The City of Coral Gables has attained the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing's (NIGP) Outstanding Agency Accreditation Achievement Award. The honor was bestowed to the City's Procurement Department for having demonstrated excellence in public procurement through the accomplishments of rigorous standards and best practices. The award serves as part of a program designed to work as a self-evaluation process based on the NIGP's agency accreditation criteria. The City of Coral Gables is one of only 77 governmental agencies throughout the United States and Canada who have attained this distinction among the NIGP's 2,100 governmental members.

Now accepting nominations for Landscape Beautification Awards >>> The City is now accepting applications for the Beautification Awards, an annual recognition that selects the best residential and/or commercial properties in Coral Gables that follow the tradition of displaying exceptionally manicured landscape properties. For the first time this year, nominations will be accepted from anyone — homeowners, professional landscapers, neighbors or the general public — to award deserving property owners within Coral Gables. The awards will recognize improvements to property landscaping that result in improving the overall aesthetics of the City. Nomination forms can be obtained at the Public Service Department or www.coralgables.com and must be submitted with photos or digital images by December 31, 5 p.m. to 2800 S.W. 72 Avenue, Miami, FL 33155. Early voting starts this week >>> If you are eager to vote for this presidential election on November 2, but want to avoid the long lines, consider early voting in Coral Gables. Beginning this week, residents can conveniently vote any day of the week at one of the many sites in and around Coral Gables. Early voting sites have been established at the Coral Gables Library, 3443 Segovia Street; West Miami City Hall, 901 SW 62 Avenue; West Dade Regional Library, 9445 SW 24 Street; Stephen P. Clark Center Lobby (Branch Office), 111 NW 1 Street. Hours vary by locations. To find out where the nearest early voting sites are, click here.

Report to us if you cannot view Coral Gables TV Channel 77 >>> Due to the recent changes in the City's cable service provider, Comcast, residents in Coral Gables are experiencing difficulties in receiving CGTV, which recently changed from Channel 18 to Channel 77. This blockage in service is caused by filters placed in outside poles of residences which need to be reported in order to be removed. If you are currently unable to view Channel 77 at your home in Coral Gables, please call 305-460-5521 or email with your address and other pertinent information.

Anti-Crime Committee meeting held at Fairchild Tropical Garden >>> Coral Gables residents from Hammock Lakes, Pine Bay, Snapper Creek, and Kings Bay areas are invited to attend the next Citywide Anti-Crime Committee meeting, to be held on Wednesday, November 3, 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Corbin A, South Entrance section of the Gardens. Residents are invited to discuss crime prevention issues in these neighborhoods. For information call 305-446-4180.

Halloween's Nightmare at 405 at the Youth Center >>> The War Memorial Youth Center will host this year Nightmare at 405, a scary and fun-filled event scheduled for Sunday, October 31, 6-10 p.m. The carnival will feature fun-filled events for the whole family, such as costume contests, carnival games and a bounce house. Admission is $3 and tickets for rides are $.50 each. For information call 305-460-5600.

Trick-or-Treat on Miracle Mile >>> You can also bring your family to celebrate Halloween at Miracle Mile in a fun and safe environment. On Saturday, October 30, Miracle Mile and the surrounding streets will host a trick-or-treating event from 4-7 p.m., featuring trick-or-treating at area stores, a scavenger hunt, Halloween pictures, a "Scary Story" contest, and a haunted house at the Baptist Medical Plaza.
