More than 67 paramedic teams from across the country competed in ALS scenarios that included administering medicines to patients and deciding on the correct treatments based on symptoms. Coral Gables Fire Rescue Team came in Sixth Place overall, beating every other participating municipality in Miami-Dade County. The two-day event took place in Orlando last July. The conference attracts between 400 to 500 paramedics, firefighters, medical directors and educators interested in learning practical research-based street medicine. The knowledge gained at these conferences and events helps paramedics better serve the citizens of Coral Gables. Like many of the historic landmarks in the City Beautiful, its public schools are also rich in history, such as Ponce de Leon Middle School. This institution is named after the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. In 1493, Ponce de Leon accompanied Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America. He later headed another expedition that would take him to Puerto Rico, Cuba and Florida where he landed just north of St. Augustine. In 1521 Ponce de Leon set out to colonize Florida with about 200 people and many domestic animals but the natives attacked and the wounded explorer sailed to Cuba where he died. Despite the thousands of years that separate Juan Ponce de Leon and his namesake middle school in Coral Gables, their mission is similar: A worldly desire for knowledge and adventure. BACK TO TOP - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hurricane Survival: Staying Safe After A Storm >>> Throughout this hurricane season, the City of Coral Gables has been actively informing residents, visitors and business owners about hurricane preparedness through community workshops, cable television shows, hurricane newsletters and on e-News. Staying true to form, this edition focuses on the hazards encountered after a hurricane, when the majority of injuries and deaths occur. Knowing the dangers can help prevent harm and most of the accidents that occur after the storm. Be aware of your surroundings as the potential for danger is everywhere. The following are important and potentially life-saving pointers to keep in mind: > Generators must only be used outdoors and away from windows, doors, garages and sheds. Make sure your generator has cooled off before refueling. Fumes from the gasoline could easily ignite the tank. > Use extreme care when operating a gas powered or electric chainsaw and always protect yourself by wearing safety glasses and gloves. > Do not walk or drive through flooded areas. As little as six inches of water can take control of your car. Also, broken glass, nails, downed power lines and other debris could be submerged. > Avoid using candles around children, use flashlights instead. For more hurricane preparation information or tips from the City of Coral Gables drop by City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way, and pick up a City Beautiful Newsletter Special Hurricane Edition or click here. BACK TO TOP - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Here’s A Traffic Lesson When School Is In Session >>> Now that children are back in school, it is especially important that drivers pay extra attention while behind the wheel. Even though many traffic calming measures have been implemented in Coral Gables, drivers should use extreme caution when driving through the City’s residential areas and school zones. Commuters are urged to slow down and obey the speed limit or face speeding fines. Residents have complained that speedy drivers endanger the safety of family and friends in neighborhoods. The Coral Gables Police Department’s Special Patrol Section will be looking out for speeders and parking violators especially in school zones and will enforce a zero tolerance policy. If pressed for time, try leaving your home or workplace a few minutes earlier as those extra minutes can prevent a terrible accident. Remember that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” For more traffic tips, call the Coral Gables Police Department at 305-460-5402. Although many seniors have years of experience driving, increasingly congested roads are making driving dangerous. Changing road and physical conditions do not mean that older commuters should surrender a driver’s license. On Saturday September 2nd and 9th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center will host an AARP course called 55 Alive. The two-day course for drivers ages 50 and over serves as a refresher course that can reduce the chances of traffic accidents. Older drivers have a crash rate second only to that of teenage drivers. Through the AARP 55 Alive course, seniors will have the power and skills necessary to change those statistics. The fee for the course is only $10. After completing the two Saturday session, seniors will receive a certificate good for three years. Most auto insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance premium for taking the course.
