The Coral Gables Police Explorer Program enables young adults between the ages of 14 and 21 to learn about a career in law enforcement. Though the program usually runs on a school calendar (September - May), it is possible to join at any time. Along with offering students a first-hand look at police work, many of the explorer activities also count toward community service requirements.

Police Explorer Activities

Police Explorers volunteer their time to serve the community, working side-by-side with Police officers in a variety of activities, including :

· Crime Prevention Projects
· Ride-along program with Police Officers
· Event crowd control
· Searches for missing persons
· Firearms training and qualification
· Competitions with other Explorer Posts
· Community Events
· Sporting events
· Parades

Minimum Qualifications

To participate, candidates must meet the following qualifications :

· Be between the ages of 14 and 21
· Obtain parental approval (with liability release)
· Maintain a 2.0 "C" grade point average or higher
· Have no criminal police record
· Be in good physical shape and health
· Successfully complete the application process (this includes a written application, oral interview and background check)
· Have a general interest in Law Enforcement
· Have good moral character
· Be available to attend meetings and events

Meetings

Explorers meet once a week for a two to three-hour session. Meetings are generally held at the Coral Gables Police Department at 2801 Salzedo Street.
