The Province of Pisa and Coral Gables:
International Hubs of Commerce, Culture and Diplomacy

Founded in 1925 and located at the Southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, like a beacon between the old world and the new one, the City of Coral Gables is considered to be one of the most beautiful communities in the United States of America. Only 14 square miles in size, it is known as a hub of international commerce and diplomacy with more than 175 multinational companies and many consulates ~ including the Consulate of Italy ~ located within its boundaries. The City’s vibrant international cultural, arts and business communities have contributed to the success and prestige of the University of Miami, a private university located in Coral Gables, with national and international accolades in Medicine, Law, Business and other important disciplines.

The City of Pisa and its Province with its millenary history is best known for its world famous leaning tower, which Galileo Galilei used for important scientific experiments which would later confirm the theory that indeed the world was round and not flat as was widely believed. Pisa’s historical relationship to the sea made it one of the Mediterranean’s most important and wealthiest cities. Its relationship to the land, the wonderful Tuscan countryside, made it renowned for its extraordinary wines and great food including the precious truffles. Pisa’s long history of welcoming scientists and scholars from al over the Mediterranean and the world has made its university one of the most prestigious in Italy and in Europe. Today both the City of Pisa and the Province of Pisa are the home of many multinational companies like Piaggio and thriving small and medium size businesses mostly in the food, wine and fashion industries that have established strong and important international economic bonds.

At first glance you would think that Coral Gables with its 80 years of history and Pisa with over 2000 years of history would have little in common. You would, however, be surprised to learn how erroneous that assumption would be. Pisa throughout its long history was considered an important crossroads of peoples and cultures, where the business, academic, artistic and political elites of the Mediterranean world would gather to discuss their affairs in many different languages - not unlike what you might see or hear in Downtown Coral Gables today. Pisa was a beacon of opportunity, prosperity and enlightenment for the many that came to her from other less fortunate areas. Just like the Pisans, the citizens of Coral Gables have a special love for their City and have had a long history of welcoming peoples from other countries and places that have helped the City become what it is today.

We are very fortunate to have our older sister, Pisa, in this Sister City relationship to look to in what we hope is just the beginning of Coral Gables’ next 2000 years of history.
