Crime Watch General Information
Crime Watch

Crime Watch Logo

Founded in 1980, the Coral Gables Citizens’ Crime Watch is a not-for-profit organization which was instituted to educate the citizens of Coral Gables about crime prevention, personal safety, homeland security and fire prevention.

Working in cooperation with the Coral Gables Police and Fire Departments, Crime Watch conducts meetings in neighborhoods to groups throughout the community. The success of the program depends on the active participation and responsibility citizens take to protect themselves and their property as well as the partnership they form with the law enforcement and fire personnel. Crime Watch believes that with the commitment and participation of Coral Gables citizens, those who live and work in this community can be kept safe from harm.

With the extraordinary support of the Police Department and the Fire Department and with the help of its Block Captains, Crime Watch makes presentations to neighborhoods, civic groups and religious organizations throughout Coral Gables.  The presentations provide information concerning crime prevention and public safety, homeland security, and fire prevention and fire safety.

Crime Watch is governed by a Board of Directors which is comprised of representatives from 24 civic organizations.  The Crime Watch Board of Directors takes pride in the success of the programs and of its service to the citizens of Coral Gables.  Among its achievements are:

*Publication of a quarterly newsletter.  The newsletter provides ongoing information on crime prevention and personal safety tips.

*Participation in the DATA DOT giveaway programs.  These programs are designed to protect vehicles from break-ins and theft.

*Participation in the Farmers’ Market.  Crime Watch distributes information and recruits Block Captains for its neighborhood meetings.

*Distribution of Holiday Safety brochures to Coral Gables businesses.  The brochures inform merchants and shoppers about holiday safety tips.

*The Citizens’ Stand Against Crime Block Parties.  These neighborhood parties are held annually and are attended by over 1200 residents.  Numerous police officer, Fire Department personnel, City Commissioners and the Mayor participate in this event.

*Distribution of information on homeland security.  Crime Watch informs the public about the web site www.Ready.com which contains information about what to do to prepare for a terrorist attack.  It also distributes a pamphlet from the National Self-Defense Institute called, What can I do?

Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys. Avoid walking at night if possible. Otherwise, stay in well-lighted areas.
