Mr. Brown has spent most of his professional career dedicated to the residents and businesses of Coral Gables. He started working for the City as a lifeguard of the Venetian Pool very shortly after college. Four months later, he became Manager of the Venetian Pool from 1975-82, and eventually was recruited to run a substantially larger operation, the Miami Seaquarium, where he served as Business Manager and General Manager from 1982-86.
In 1986, he returned to the City of Coral Gables as an Assistant City Manager, a position he held for 16 years before earning the title of Coral Gables’ 12th City Manager.
Today, Mr. Brown is widely recognized as one of Coral Gables most influential leaders. In November of 2007, he was the recipient of the prestigious University of Miami Iron Arrow Honor Society’s Bowman Foster Ashe In-Memoriam Award in recognition for his unwavering support of the Tribe and the University of Miami. He is a member of many professional and civic organizations including the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Secretary of the 200 Club, Junior Orange Bowl Committee, University of Miami National Alumni Association, among others. He is also listed in the directory of Who’s Who of Public Service in North America and Global Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals.
Among his most recent accomplishments at the helm of Coral Gables are the modernizing of services through automation and reorganization, instituting a more open communication with residents, the implementation of the successful Coral Gables Trolley and the nation’s first pay-by-cellphone parking program, the construction of the new Museum Parking Garage, the restoration of historic landmarks such as the Merrick House, the City Hall Cupola, the Ponce de Leon Plaza, the Country Club of Coral Gables, the DeSoto Fountain and the revamping of the Procurement Code, Historic Preservation Ordinance, and a new Zoning Code rewrite.
Mr. Brown received his Bachelor of Education in Health and Recreation and a Master’s of Education in Personnel Administration, both from the University of Miami.
His personal philosophy is to always abide by the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Mr. Brown is happily married to Linda Dunn Brown. He is an avid golfer and gardener, and a devoted fan of the University of Miami Hurricanes.
